Celebrate at Home 2020 - Contest expanded & extended 31 July!!!

This was such a success, and the entries so fantastic, that EVERYONE was awarded a prize of a Finnware gift certificate!

Stay tuned…we may do another virtual celebration for the winter holidays….

Because COVID-19 precautions will prevent our Nordic community from gathering together for Midsummer Festival events this year, we are encouraging folks to celebrate their Nordic heritage and spirit in other ways this summer.

We are sponsoring three contests to encourage member participation:

  • Smørrebrød & Recipe Contest - for open-face sandwich design and recipes

  • Danish Culture & Heritage Contest - for arts and crafts

  • Danish Pride Contest - for displaying Danish spirit in your home

See below for some ideas - and click HERE to see how local Danes are bringing the Festival spirit into their homes!

Send photos and descriptions of your creations to: lowercolumbiadanes@gmail.com

We will publish photos, a short caption, and names online. [Let us know if you prefer us not to use names or full names].

Voting for contest entries will take place via e-mail between 01 August and our 06 August meeting: lowercolumbiadanes@gmail.com

Winners will be announced on the website after our meeting in August, and prize delivery arranged with the winners.

Danish Society officers reserve the right to award additional prizes, so we hope to see LOTS of great entries!

Quarantine Smørrebrød & Danish Recipe Contest

Try your hand at making attractive-looking, delicious open-faced sandwiches!

Smørrebrød literally means “buttered bread", and traditionally these sandwiches were a way for thrifty Danes to use up whatever leftovers were lying around the house (and in the time of pandemics, to minimize trips to the grocery store).

However, smørrebrød can be elevated to a culinary work of art, with careful attention paid to visual, olfactory, and flavor composition.

If smørrebrød is not your thing, then try your hand at ANY Danish recipe and share the result with us.

At least two prizes will be awarded for smørrebrød entries:

  1. Most Visually Appealing

  2. Best Creative Use of Leftovers

and two prizes for other recipes:

  1. Most Mouth-watering

  2. People’s Choice

Danish Heritage and Culture Contest

Now is the perfect time to get in touch with family and friends to learn more about your personal connection to Danish heritage or culture. Talk with folks in person (if you are sheltering at home with them or standing at least 6 feet apart), or by phone/video conference (if you are physically separate) to learn family history or funny stories. Write down events of significance to you. Create a “family quiz” about your personal Danish heritage to share.

You can show off other aspects of Danish culture inside your home with artwork, hardanger, music, and other items/activities. Consider sharing the stories associated with each with others. Dust off a new item each day during Festival Week (15-21 June 2020) and give it pride of place on your dining table!

At least one prize will be awarded for

  • Best in Show

Show Your Danish Pride Contest

Dress up your yard or your home by flying the Dannebrog, displaying Danish colors of red and white, and getting creative about sharing your Danish spirit with your neighbors and community.

You might even be able to convince your pets to get in on the action!

Because we can’t go to Festival, let’s make Festival come to us.
