4th Annual Midsummer Festival Drive-by Optog

To raise awareness of Nordic heritage and culture in Astoria, and to shamelessly advertise our own most awesome Danish Booth at the upcoming Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, we will be participating in the 4th Annual Stationary Optog. Optog” means “parade” in Danish, but in this case we flip the script on a traditional parade - instead of us parading in the streets and spectators lining the sidewalk as we go by, we stand on the sidewalk and the spectators in cars drive by us on the street.

Danish Society members will hold and wave Danish flags and be encouraged to show their Danish pride in by wearing Danish-themed clothing or costumes. Members of all the other Nordic Lodgest from the Lower Columbia area will also participate - Finns, Norwegians, Swedes, and Icelanders. Dress for whatever weather Astoria chooses to have that weekend!!!

Assemble between 16th and 17th Streets on Marine Drive (in front of the Columbia River Maritime Museum)..

PARKING: please park somewhere above Commercial or Duane Streets on the side roads; we are asking people to avoid parking in the Museum parking lot, because we’d like to ensure the Museum has parking for its own visitors and continues to support the Optog in the future.

The Sons of Norway Nidaros Lodge #16 is holding its annual lefse-making at the Gearhart Lodge from 9 AM to 4 PM each day. You don’t have to be Norwegian to participate - you just need to be friendly and willing to help out.

Lefse made here will be sold at the Astorian Scandinavian Midsummer Festival to raise funds for the Lodge. This Norwegian flatbread is one of the most popular snacks at Festival - in part because it is generously smeared with butter, sugar, and cinnamon!

If you want to learn how to make hardanger (wheat) lefse, then please stop by for a couple of hours, all day, or the whole weekend! There are tasks that include both sitting and standing and are appropriate for all ages. Lodge members will help you to learn how to mix the dough, roll it out into the 12” rounds, cook it on a special lefse griddle, and dry it for storage.

There is a potluck lunch each day to keep the cooks energized. (Main dishes provided - just bring a side)

Later on, there will be a separate get-together to butter the lefse and prepare it for sale at Festival.

Midsummer Optog (socially-distanced) - in front of Columbia River Maritime Museum

The 2020 Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival is cancelled, but the festival committee has found a new way to publicly celebrate the solstice. Festival co-chair Carla Oja announced that members of the local Scandinavian community will hold a stationary Optog from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturday, June 20, on both sides of Marine Drive between 16th and 18th in front of the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Local residents and visitors are welcome to join in and/or drive by and show support for our Nordic community.

An Optog is typically a walking parade where participants walk in family groups and lodge groups carrying their country’s flag. In normal years, the Optog is held immediately preceding the flag raising ceremony and raising of the Midsummer Pole at midday on Saturday of the three-day festival. This year’s participants are asked to follow latest social distancing guidelines from the Clatsop County Health Department and warnings from the City of Astoria Police to stay on sidewalks and use appropriate crosswalks. Participants are encouraged to wear their Nordic folk wear or Scandinavian attire such as sweaters or festival sweatshirts and to bring a Nordic flag if they have one. Members of the 2020 Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Court and the Nordic Viking Scandia dancers will attend along with Scandinavian lodge representatives and members of the all-volunteer festival committee.

Co-chair Carla Oja says, “It’s still Midsummer even if the festival is cancelled. We need to find new different ways to celebrate and hope this will be a fun event for all. Join us if you can, drive by, or stay home and hang your Nordic flag in front of your house.”
